What is the game about
Barbecubes is a small dexterity game, where you pick up food with tweezers & place it on a miniature barbeque rack. Just like those barbeques with friends or family, the aim is not to drop the food on the floor… There is no 5 second rule in this game! But why the “cubes” name? The pieces are done in pixelated style, like Minecraft cubes.
Opening the box (sorry tin!)
Everything is self-contained inside a tiny tin; we are talking small enough to put in a pocket here. Open it up and tip the pieces out, then place the 2 wooden racks on top of the open tin base. That’s right, the tin forms a core component of the game, the barbeque itself. It all feels small & simple, but well made and cartoony fun, which fits the summery theme perfectly, and the small tin makes storage easy – which is an exciting bonus if gaming is your hobby! Got that really small gap on your shelf? This tin will fit right in there.
Let’s get cooking
As mentioned, the set includes putting 2 racks on tin to form your barbeque. You Shuffle the deck of cards and place them in reach of all players, put all the food items in pile and you are ready to play.
On each players turn you pick up the top card from the deck. This card will give you an instruction. Are you placing a steak over 2 racks? Or maybe a sausage on one? Or are you being challenged to balance a fish over 2 racks with your opposite hand? Pick up the tongues (basically tiny tweezers) and attempt the challenge set. Complete the challenge successfully and you can breathe a sigh of relief and play continues, moving to the next player.
If it’s your turn and the barbeque is looking full, you can’t stack the food, you must try and move something to make space… If you drop your item on the way to the tin, you can pick it up and try again but knock the food into the tin and you keep the card.
If you collect 2 cards, you’re out of the game. Last player remaining wins!
Final thoughts
It sounds simple, doesn’t it? Well, it is. This is a game you could teach to anyone, friends, family, young children, casual players or hard-core hobbyists.
We love this game for a bit of fun. It’s not a heavy, crunchy Euro game, so if that’s what you’re looking for, keep scrolling. But if you’re up for a fun, family-friendly, party game, with lots of laughs, this could be your new favourite. With games taking anywhere between a minute (yes, we had a game end that quickly!) to 10 minutes on average, this game really can fill your time with giggles without too much time commitment.
