Yesterday, 1985 Games announced their new Studio Ghibli-inspired Dungeons and Dragons 5E campaign setting: Obojima – Tales from Yatamon. It has flown to the top 1% of all tabletop Kickstarter campaigns launched so far in 2025!
With only days to go in the campaign, Obojima’s rapid rise to the top proves that people are craving emotionally driven, artistic, and immersive tabletop games that place storytelling at the forefront. The project has proven to be one of 2025’s most successful Kickstarter campaigns, bringing together the world-building of D&D, the whimsicality of Studio Ghibli and the adventurous spirit of The Legend of Zelda.
1985 Games is proving that, on top of their ten previous Kickstarter successes, this campaign will be another beautiful game with unique design and game play. A highlight of their projects was their 2019 Dungeon Craft launch, which proved to be a huge success, helping players to tell and be a part of empowering stories.
Game Play and Elements
Obojima invites you to play as a local who has been adopted by one of the cat households – over time, become a Witch Coven Warlock and use your powers to explore the world around you. The game allows you to fully immerse yourself in the magic with new sub classes, spells, items, backgrounds, and vehicles to enjoy and explore!
As well as the dynamic world-building, Obojima offers a whole host of creatures and monsters hiding in the city of Yatamon. A few examples include the Melon Bird, or the Graffiti Golem, who cause both mayhem and madness within this world. Creatures are accompanied by beautiful art cards that capture the cute and stylistic Studio Ghibli design.
The setting features hand-painted artwork, and is compatible with both standard D&D 5th Edition mechanics as well as the new edition format. The edition comes with one game board, eight add-ons, and two books!
Yanari: The Witches Market is another board game connected to the Obojima world, with its Kickstarter released September 2025, and is similarly being published by 1985 Games.
Overall, the Kickstarter has well over-achieved its inital goal of £7,603, having raised a massive £542, 448! We can safely say board game lovers are extremely excited about this one!
