It’s safe to say the announcement of 2nd edition Splendor earlier this year was hugely disappointing. There was nothing new of significance to the brilliant game. Only the artwork, which does look cool. The gameplay however, is identical to the 2014 classic.
Will the Silk Road expansion, then, take off with some true variation and new game mechanics to be introduced? I truly hope so!
We are teased by Space Cowboys in a recent Instagram post that “Silk road offers new strategic possibilities”. We are told we will “explore new territories, establish lucrative business routes and gain support from cities”.
Bu what does that all mean?
Unfortunately, I’ve no idea and the internet is giving no more clues about what is coming. Lots of retailers are preparing for pre orders and the suggested release date is the 8th November.
I will be paying attention to what is coming. Splendor is a wonderful game, a true modern classic that actually doesn’t need any new mechanics.
However, I cannot help but wonder what these possibilities mean and what that could look like for Splendor. So, we will see what November brings us… we definitely want more than just artwork.
