Slay the Spire: Downfall expansion smashes Kickstarter goal

Mega Crit has kicked off a new Kickstarter for the Slay the Spire: The Board Game Downfall expansion - and it didn’t take long for things to take off.

The campaign blew past its $50,000 funding target in just 10 minutes. At the time of writing, it’s already pulled in over $2.5 million from more than 13,000 backers, putting it firmly among the platform’s latest tabletop success stories.

Plenty of pledge options

There are six different pledge tiers available, ranging from standard expansion access to full-on collector bundles. These include:

  • Downfall Pledge
  • Downfall Collector’s
  • Collector’s Pledge
  • Downfall All-in
  • Collector’s Bundle
  • Heart’s All In

As you’d expect, the higher tiers come with a stack of extras - think branded playmats, custom card sleeves, upgraded tokens and other deluxe components aimed squarely at fans who want the full experience.

Play as the bosses

The Downfall expansion is based on the popular fan-made mod for Slay the Spire, and it flips the usual formula on its head.

Instead of climbing the Spire as a hero, players take control of some of the game’s most recognisable bosses, including Slime Boss, Hexaghost, Hermit and the Guardian. It’s a neat twist that should feel familiar to fans of the mod while offering something a bit different on the tabletop.

Not a standalone

One thing to keep in mind: Downfall isn’t a standalone expansion. You’ll need the base game to play, although backers can add it to their pledge if they don’t already own a copy.

More Slay the Spire on the way

It’s been a busy stretch for the series more broadly. Alongside the expansion, the original game’s soundtrack has recently been re-released on vinyl, complete with new artwork from Nimit Malavia and four additional tracks - tying in nicely with the continued momentum around Slay the Spire 2.

Between the campaign’s early performance and the ongoing interest in the IP, it’s clear there’s still plenty of appetite for Slay the Spire - both on and off the table.
