Shatterpoint news: into the future, in more ways than one...

So, there was quite a lot of hoo-hah when Atomic Mass announced that their excellent small-scale Star Wars skirmish game Shatterpoint would be getting fewer releases going forwards. Bring on the naysayers! Summon the doombringers! The internet does LOVE a bit of clicky ragebait, after all. So what’s ACTUALLY happening?

Broadly, we’re not going to see 4 squad boxes at a time - which to be honest, as a player and slightly obsessive collector, is going to be a lot easier on the wallet! We’ve actually already seen this: the most recent wave comprised a terrain piece and 3 Squads, and rather than being in the conventional 2 sets of 2, we had another Rebel set for Rogue One (which admittedly was particularly well matched to the previous Andor set), a standalone Separatist box and a standalone Clone box. Now granted AMG did not phrase the press release well, and I can see why folk panicked, but they were quick to clarify and reiterate the plans going forwards, confirming that Episode I sets are coming (Qui-Gon has been long teased) before we move into the Sequel trilogy era, which has yet to be explored in the game.

All that being said, we have just had a surprise announcement of a new paired set of Squads: Baylan Skoll / Shin Hati with HK droids and Morgan Elspeth with Apollo and Night Troopers! Now these aren’t really that much of a surprise, they’ve been hinted at and the box makeup is almost exactly as the internet predicted.

More droids are always cool, and I love the Shin Hati figure. The Baylan sculpt is great... not 100% sold on the pose; I like the contradiction of his rage and stillness that we see in the show. But I am particularly excited for Morgan Elspeth, myself. Whilst I would really have liked a large base version of the Night Sister coven, it’s great that we’re getting something that will properly complement the existing Dathomir set.

Her pose and sculpt are perfect, plus getting troopers on a large base is rather neat! Betraying my love of Battle Droid shenanigans, I fear. So, between these and a new scenario pack just out, I think it’s fair to say Shatterpoint isn’t going anywhere!
