Fans of the steampunk inspired euro game Dogs of War have reason to be happy at the moment, as it has been announced that the game is getting a reprint, nearly 15 years after its original release.
Aided and backed by Shut Up and Sit Down as part of their SU&SD Presents series, following on from their other recent announcement Animal Rescue Team, Dogs of War is a title that has felt rife for a reprint for a while, and it is very exciting to hear its making its return.
Published by Play to Z games and available now on Gamefound, Dogs of War is something you certainly shouldn’t sleep on, whether or not you were aware of its original existence.
What is Dogs of War?
Dogs of War was an incredibly thematic strategy war game for 3-5 players, where you made very loose alliances with your other players or fellow dogs of war, backing and unbacking different houses depending on whether you think they can win a given battle.
You’re looking to gain influence with houses, trying to earn rewards and riches, and of course attempting to crush and defeat your pesky rivals in combat.
For those that played it, it was quickly beloved for its very mean gameplay and shaky alliances, but it never fully captured the attention of a wider audience, but this new release feels like it might have the momentum to make a bigger splash in the board gaming sphere.
What’s New?
As stated, Shut Up And Sit Down have helped bring this game back to life with publisher Play to Z Games and designer Paolo Mori, particularly when it comes to the art direction.
This new version looks less muddy and unappealing compared to the original, with beautiful new designs for the game board and lovely, chunky looking components, while keeping the suitably horrific aesthetic of the original. It also comes in a much smaller box, which is always appreciated in my household.
The gameplay itself has been tweaked as well, reduced down to three hours to make it a shorter, punchier affair. The amount of player powers have been doubled but readjusted, to make them feel more balanced and competitive. In short this isn’t a reskin, it’s a remake.
As such Dogs of War, an already great game, is getting a much needed makeover that might mean it gets the love it deserves. If you loved the original, you will still see the core of that game here, but one that you might find flows a lot better than before. And if you’re entirely new to it, it could just be another crunchy, argument inducing game which can be so much fun to play with the right crowd.
If this all sounds like a bit of you, then Dogs of War can be backed on Gamefound now!
