Portal Games unveils Abroad

Portal Games has announced Abroad, a new travel-themed board game set to make its English-language debut at Gen Con in August 2026, before a wider retail release in September.

Designed for 1–4 players, Abroad aims to blend accessible gameplay with a theme that leans heavily into real-world exploration - specifically, travelling across Europe.

A board game built around real places

Created by designers Rodrigo Rego and Danilo Valente, Abroad revolves around collecting and playing location cards inspired by real destinations. Each card highlights different aspects of a place - its culture, history, or atmosphere - giving the game a strong thematic hook.

The idea is simple: build your own journey while making strategic decisions about which locations to visit and how to score the most points. That mix of theme and planning has already drawn comparisons to modern favourites like Wingspan and Ark Nova.

More than just a theme

Early impressions suggest Abroad leans hard into its concept. Reviewers have noted that it often sparks real-world conversations at the table, with players swapping travel stories or even looking up destinations they hadn’t considered before.

That crossover between gameplay and real-life inspiration seems to be a big part of its appeal - and something Portal Games is clearly leaning into with this release.

Strong early reception

The game has already seen success in its German-language edition, which sold out its first print run during SPIEL Essen 2025. It also landed on the Fairplay “Hidden Gems” list and currently holds a very solid rating on BoardGameGeek.

Support from the Spiel des Jahres jury has highlighted the game’s broader appeal, particularly its focus on shared experiences and cultural exploration rather than competition alone.

A notable collaboration

Abroad is being published in partnership with 1 More Time Games, a studio with a growing track record. Its previous titles include Riftforce and Challengers - both of which picked up major award recognition.

With multiple language editions already planned, Abroad looks set for a wide international rollout.

One to watch at Gen Con

Between its accessible premise and strong early buzz, Abroad feels like a game that could land well with a broad audience.

We’ll get a closer look when it officially premieres at Gen Con this August - but if early reception is anything to go by, this is one travel-themed title that might inspire more than just your next game night.
