Queen Elizabeth II, the UK’s longest-serving monarch, has died aged 96, after coming to the throne in 1952 aged 25.
The Queen passed away Thursday afternoon whilst at her Scottish estate at Balmoral, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. King Charles III has described her passing as a ‘a moment of great sadness’ for the whole Royal family, and that they will ‘mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovreign and much-loved Mother’.
Immense crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace, while tributes flooded in from across the country and around the world. Fears about the queen’s health had been growing as the royal family rushed to Scotland to be by her side after Buckingham Palace stated she was under medical supervision.
Not many Britons have known another monarch, so the end of Elizabeth’s reign after more than 70 years will prove to be a big change for the royal family and Britain.
The country’s new king, King Charles III, has released a statement and will address the nation Friday.
