Has McDonald’s kicked Monopoly to the curb?

An angry McDonalds box in fire attacking someone

There’s some seriously disappointing news for fans of peeling tiny stickers off burger boxes. McDonald’s Monopoly won’t be returning to UK restaurants in 2026! After nearly two decades of annual prize hunting, the promotion is taking a year off, leaving plenty of customers wondering whether this is simply a break or the beginning of the end for one of McDonald’s most recognisable promotions.

The end of an era?

McDonald’s Monopoly first arrived in the UK in 2005, meaning the 2025 edition marked roughly 20 years of the promotion. Every year, customers could collect Monopoly stickers from selected menu items and try to complete property sets for prizes. The rewards have varied over the years, but recent promotions have offered everything from cash and holidays to TVs, free food and the ever-popular McDonald’s Gold Card. The 2025 edition even featured a McDonald’s Monopoly board game, giving fans a physical version of the fast-food competition to take home. Usually, the promotion arrives around September, so its absence in 2026 is particularly noticeable.

No Monopoly, no problem?

McDonald’s hasn't exactly abandoned competitions altogether. Earlier in 2026, the company launched its CARDS promotion, offering customers the chance to win cash, free meals and other prizes. McDonald’s has also introduced other promotional campaigns, including its first Xbox partnership through its Side Missions promotion. So while the famous Monopoly stickers aren't appearing on your fries boxes this year, there are still other ways to potentially bag a prize with your McDonald’s order! The company has confirmed that Monopoly will not feature during 2026, but it hasn't ruled out a return in 2027. That leaves the door open for the little stickers to make their comeback.

The World’s most competitive Big Mac?

McDonald’s Monopoly has been running internationally for decades. The promotion first appeared in the US in 1987 before eventually making its way to the UK and several other countries. Over the years, it has developed its own collection of strategies and traditions. Some players became experts at knowing which menu items carried stickers, while others took things a step further by checking discarded packaging for unused pieces. This practice became known as “wombling”, with players collecting stickers that had been left behind. Naturally, people have spent years trying to figure out how to improve their chances of winning.

Will Monopoly return?

For now, there’s no official confirmation that McDonald’s Monopoly will return in 2027. McDonald’s says it is continuing to look for new ways to keep customers interested in its promotions, while listening to what people enjoy. So, for the first time since 2005, September will arrive without the familiar scramble for that final property. Whether this is simply a one-year holiday for McDonald’s Monopoly or the final roll of the dice remains to be seen. For now, keep those fingers ready. You never know when Mayfair might come back around!
