Star Wars: Battle of Hoth has picked up the award for Best American Board Game at the 2026 UK Games Expo, adding another achievement to the tactical miniatures game inspired by one of the franchise's most iconic battles.
A Galactic Showdown
Presented as part of the UKGE Judges' Choice Awards, the Best American Board Game category recognises large-scale, thematic experiences, and Battle of Hoth certainly fits the bill.
The game recreates the Empire's attack on Echo Base from The Empire Strikes Back, with Rebel forces attempting to hold back advancing Imperial troops across the frozen plains of Hoth. The box includes 74 miniatures, featuring AT-AT walkers, snowspeeders, snowtroopers and probe droids, bringing the famous battle to life on the tabletop.
Built for Strategy
Beneath the cinematic presentation is a system that will be familiar to many strategy gamers. Designed by Richard Borg and Adrien Martinot, Battle of Hoth uses Borg's proven Commands & Colors system, which also powers titles such as Memoir '44.
Players use command cards to activate units across different sections of the battlefield, creating tactical decisions without overwhelming complexity. The game supports two to four players, either competitively or in teams, with matches taking around 30 minutes.
Alongside standalone scenarios, players can also tackle linked campaigns where the outcome of one battle influences the next.
