It’s been a long time coming, but the wait is finally over. Dynamite Entertainment has officially announced that Army of Darkness: The Board Game is heading into retail soon – and fans of Ash Williams, boomsticks, and the Necronomicon can finally rejoice.
That’s right, after more than seven years in development limbo, the cult-classic horror comedy is getting the tabletop treatment it deserves. Developed in collaboration with the team at Lynnvander Studios, this game drops players straight into the medieval chaos of Lord Arthur’s castle. You’ll take on the role of none other than Ash himself as you defend humanity from the endless hordes of Deadites clawing at the gates.
On the Defense
At its core, Army of Darkness: The Board Game is a cooperative tower defence experience for 1-4 players. Each round, you and your fellow survivors will strategise and fight to keep the forces of evil from breaching the castle walls. Your ultimate goal? Hold out long enough for Evil Ash to show his undead face — and then send him back to whatever dark pit he crawled out of before he can swipe the Necronomicon.
Games are designed to last around 60 to 90 minutes, which feels like the sweet spot for a cinematic, edge-of-your-seat battle between good and evil.
A Few Tweaks From the Original
If you’ve been following this project since the early announcements, you’ll notice a few updates. The final retail edition uses cardboard standees instead of miniatures, keeping the price and setup light. But for collectors or hobby painters itching for more 3D carnage, there’s a separate miniatures expansion available, featuring detailed figures of Ash, Evil Ash, and the Deadite hordes.
It’s recommended for players aged 14 and up, though anyone who’s seen Army of Darkness knows that sense of humour is half the fun.
