Warner Bros. Games and design studio MinaLima have announced a new tabletop RPG project set in the wizarding world. The game, titled Harry Potter: Defenders of Hogwarts, is currently being prepared for a Kickstarter launch and is expected to explore the events leading up to the final conflict at Hogwarts.
The project arrives alongside ongoing work on a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy at Avalanche Software, though the tabletop game is moving ahead separately through crowdfunding.
A Story Set Before the Final Battle
Harry Potter: Defenders of Hogwarts is set in the period just before Lord Voldemort’s invasion of Hogwarts. Players are placed in the middle of rising tension at the school as Dark Forces begin to close in.
The game supports two to five players, is designed for ages 13 and up, and features sessions lasting up to around 90 minutes. It focuses on team-based play, where players choose whether to defend Hogwarts or align with the Dark Forces.
That choice-driven structure suggests a flexible setup, with different factions shaping how each session unfolds.
Designed for Tabletop Play First
The game is being developed with industrial designer David Waterman involved in the design process, alongside MinaLima’s visual direction.
While full mechanics have not been detailed yet, the project is described as a tabletop role-playing game with structured scenarios and replayable missions rather than a single linear campaign.
Early descriptions point to a mix of character-driven objectives, faction alignment, and scenario-based encounters set within Hogwarts and its surrounding areas.
Part of a Bigger Wizarding World Push
Interest around the project also comes at a time when the wider Harry Potter gaming space is active again. Hogwarts Legacy launched in 2023 and went on to sell over 40 million copies worldwide, generating more than $1 billion in revenue.
A sequel is currently in development at Avalanche Software, although it has not yet been shown at recent major industry events such as Summer Game Fest or PlayStation State of Play.
Reports suggest the studio is still hiring and building out its team, with some industry observers pointing to a longer development timeline for the follow-up project.
What We Know About the Tabletop Version
The tabletop adaptation is being positioned as a separate experience from the video games. It is built around a self-contained structure where players make decisions that influence the outcome of each session.
The official description highlights a conflict-driven setup where players can represent Hogwarts houses or take on roles aligned with Dark Forces working against the school.
That split suggests a strong focus on replayability, with different group dynamics depending on how players choose to approach each game.
Kickstarter Launch Incoming
Harry Potter: Defenders of Hogwarts is currently listed as coming soon on Kickstarter, where fans can already sign up for launch notifications.
No funding goal or release timeline has been confirmed yet, but the project is expected to move into its full crowdfunding phase shortly.
For now, it stands as one of the more notable licensed tabletop projects in development, combining a familiar setting with a more structured, scenario-driven approach to role-playing gameplay.
