5 Games To Get Your Kids Into Board Games

As a new parent to an incredibly curious little boy, I’m already planning the best way to introduce him to the wonderful world of board games. While I’ll need to wait a few years before we can start, I’ve already identified some perfect gateway games that could help other parents introduce their children to the ever-growing world that is board gaming.

Bananagrams

Unlike its more traditional cousin Scrabble, Bananagrams offers a dynamic and fast-paced word-building experience without the need for a board. Players race against each other to create their own interconnected word grids using letter tiles drawn from a communal pool. As each player completes their grid they yell “PEEL!” forcing all players to draw another tile, until all the tiles are gone. While designed for older children, younger players can team up with adults to level the playing field. I’m not a teacher but I find that bananagrams is not just entertaining – it seems like a useful tool for developing vocabulary and spelling skills.

Little Scythe

Don’t let the name intimidate you – this adorable adaptation of the complex strategy game Scythe is perfectly tailored for younger players. Children embark on adventures as pairs of animal friends competing in a grand tournament. Through pie fights, quests, and strategic movement, players work to earn trophies. The aim is to use just three actions (Move, Seek, or Make) to be the first to earn 4 trophies from 8 possible categories. Don’t get me wrong, it won’t be the first game I play with my son, but once he turns 8 I’m hoping it will be a perfect way to introduce more complex gaming mechanics while maintaining a child-friendly theme and approachable ruleset.

Outfoxed

This cooperative detective game transforms children into sleuths working together to catch the pie-pilfering culprit who stole Mrs. Plumpert’s prized pot pie (forgive the excessive alliteration but it is the best description). As young detectives move around the board gathering clues, they

have to rely on teamwork and develop deductive reasoning skills if they want to stop the dastardly fox escaping the coop. The cooperative nature of this game removes competitive pressure, making it particularly suitable for younger children who can enjoy the thrill of mystery-solving as a team.

Kingdomino

Combining the familiar concept of dominoes with tile placement strategy, Kingdomino strikes a perfect balance between accessibility and depth. Players become lords expanding their realms by carefully placing terrain tiles to create the most valuable kingdom. The game’s vivid artwork immediately draws children in, while its straightforward rules mask surprisingly rich strategic possibilities that grow with the players’ abilities.

The Kingdomino series has also grown over the years to accommodate a range of ages, in particular Dragomino simplifies the core mechanics into an easy to play, but equally enjoyable, dragon egg-hunting adventure.

Hey, That’s My Fish!

In this charming tactical game, players guide their penguins across a shrinking ice floe in pursuit of fish. Each move requires players to claim tiles and collect fish while carefully considering how their actions affect the playing field. The visual nature of the strategy makes it extremely accessible to younger players, while also keeping adults engaged. With a quick playtime of 15-20 minutes, it fits perfectly into family game nights and is quick to learn but offers plenty of room for tactical thinking as children develop their gaming skills.

Introducing children to board games can be an incredibly rewarding experience that goes beyond simple entertainment. Each of these games offers unique opportunities for learning and skill development while maintaining the crucial element of fun. Be warned, though – once your children discover the joy of board gaming, don’t be surprised if they start eyeing your personal collection.
