During each round, they simultaneously draw chips and add them to their pot. The higher the face value of the drawn chip, the further it is placed in the swirling pattern, increasing how much your potion is worth. Push your luck as far as you can, but if you add too many cherry bombs, your pot explodes! At the end of each round, players gain victory points and coins to spend on new ingredients to add to their bags, depending on the strength of the ingredients in their pots. But players with exploded pots must choose points or coins — not both! The player with the most victory points at the end of nine rounds wins the game. The game plays the same, with you drawing ingredient chits out of your bag. You add them to your cauldron as per usual. Only this time, a new phase gets added. After everyone's stopped drawing or blown up, check your cauldron's ingredient types. You get one lab point per unique ingredient drawn. You also get one lab point if you drew exactly a sum of seven unwanted white ingredients. You also get points for each of your neighbours whose concoction exploded.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe lab points you get determines an extra reward, depending on the disease type you're aiming to cure. This could be the chance to earn more money to buy an extra chit. It could be extra rat tails, or straight-up extra points. There's four key items that offer ways to mix the game up. For starters there's the witches, themselves. These are a set of new characters, all whom have a coin cost (bronze, silver and gold). Players can visit the corresponding witch and pay the cost to trigger that ability, once per game. Some allow you to shop for double the value of your potion's worth. Others grant points according to how many unique colour ingredients you pulled this round. There's a new ingredient available to buy - Locoweed. The ability it provides is that it mimics the action of the previously pulled ingredient. It can an unpredictable catalyst! (Both good, and bad...) Also in the box are new ingredient books for all the original ingredient types. There was already a lot of possibilities for variety in the base game. Now The Herb Witches allows for yet more modular options. You can tweak things from game-to-game to ensure it feels different every time! Last of all, there are a complete set of black player pieces, meaning that a fifth player can join in the fun. Seeing as much of the gameplay of The Quacks of Quedlinburg occurs in a simultaneous fashion, there's no worry about scaling for player count. The game works in equal brilliant fashion, making this another win for Schmidt Spiele. It goes without saying though, that The Herb Witches is of course an expansion. Each round you will draw ingredients from your bag and add them to your cauldron player board, starting at the middle and spiralling outwards. Each ingredient is numbered 1-4, and that's how many spaces the ingredient moves around the cauldron. Your bag starts with lots of white ingredients in and one green and one orange. The trick is that if the total value of the white ingredients totals more than seven, your cauldron explodes, and you bust.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe further around the cauldron you get, the more victory points and spending power you receive. You can choose to buy up to two new ingredients of different colours at the end of the round. Not only do they not explode your cauldron, but they also give you access to special powers. These powers are colour-specific but for each colour, there are four different powers, with you choosing one each game or going with the suggested set-ups.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf you explode, you cannot choose to use your money and take victory points, but must instead take only one. The powers of the ingredients give you plenty of options for avoiding explosions by mitigating the dreaded white ingredients but this is a luck-based game and sometimes you are just going to draw all your white ingredients in a row.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eQuacks of Quedlinburg has tons of variety, a great catch-up mechanic and is just plain old fun. Thanks to the ingredient powers, there is plenty of variety. The Herb Witches and The Alchemists expansions add even more.
